Having sensibly ditched her rather un-mysterious
first name of Jillian, this Los Angeles singer has
emerged as one of 2014's buzziest prospects. With
a dark, dreamy sound to match her pouting, kohlrimmed
image, Banks announced herself via-last
autumn's London EP – a drowsy affair inspired by
several weeks spent attuning to the drizzle and
bustle of the UK capital.
"I have a very feminine voice when I write, a very
womanly point of view," she said of her decision
to trade as Banks. "My last name feels strong and
powerful. To me, it's almost a bit masculine. I like
the dichotomy of the two. Two sides perfectly
represented within my name. Femininity can be a
powerful thing. "
She certainly isn't your everyday up-and-comer.
Banks isn't comfortable on a pedestal and, at time of
writing, her Facebook page lists her phone number
– should you wish to get in touch.
