There aren’t too many “experimental party”
contenders around in 2014, but even if they were
ten-a-penny in Irish venues, we reckon Blue Whale
would elliptically battle them off the dance floor
with ease. Taking instrumental post-rock and
sticking a glitter ball above it, this Belfast collective
have faith in the little-known adage (possibly just invented) that those who dare to take chances
sonically, reap the musical rewards. Bits of Can
and Krautrock, jazz signatures and dead-ahead
guitar riffage coalesce when Blue Whale perform.
That it doesn’t end up a clumsy cacophony says
everything about their instinctive melodic nous
and musicianship. Note: if some of this stuff proves
difficult to actually dance to, it’s just because you’re
a pre-programmed, awkward 4/4 robot.
