Perhaps the most orthodox of our international picks
for 2014, Circa Waves are a swaggering throwback to
the louche gutter-rock of The Libertines. Formed just
a few months ago, they've already caused a splash in
Britain, with single 'Get Away' championed by a bevy
of leftfield (ish) DJs. Their's is an interesting backstory
too – having spent several years passing in and
out of bands, in early 2013, singer Keiran Shuddall decided it was time to knuckle down musically
speaking.
“I didn’t used to be as determined as I am now
to write songs and make a really good band,” he
reflects. “I told myself that I either had to get a real
job or give music a proper go and try and make it
a success.”
Locked away, he wrote the bones of an album then
hooked up with bassist Sam Rourke, drummer Sian
Plummer and guitarist Joe Falconer. Even early on it
was obvious Shuddall's songs were special and Circa
Waves were snapped up by Transgressive, the Warner
imprint that brought the world Foals.
