David Kitt’s compadre in New Jackson, by night
Damo Lynch fights crimes against music as
Diamond Dagger. Retro and all the better for it,
the April 2013 release of the Bison EP marked him
out as one to watch. We’re awash with synths at the moment, but what Diamond Dagger brings to
the table is a confidence, a ruthlessness when it
comes to making sure every line is contagious, and
a genuine love for that ‘back to the future’ sound.
No fad or fashion accessory, this is Lynch's music.
The highlight of his short career so far is surely
‘What’s Your Friend’s Name’. A move away from
his usual instrumental aesthetic, it employs the
gorgeous vocals of Meljoann to create a ‘crying on
the dancefloor’ tribute to ‘90s R&B. If The Human
League’s Philip Oakey had time-travelled to the
future and kidnapped Aaliyah, he might have
concocted something similar. Diamond Dagger
calls it “boogie funk”. Whatever tag you want to
put on it, inevitably you’re going to get down.
He’s recently been working with John Cowhie aka
Goodtime, a further excursion into pop. More of
the same, please.
