Yes, they're named after the Suede song which,
terrifyingly, was two decades old as of last year.
True to their handle, the quartet deal in louche
guitar pop, though, unlike vintage Brett and co,
you won't find them slinking vampirically around
Old London Towne. Based in New York, the band
was put together by Matt Hitt, a Welshman who
went to America to teach guitar, was spotted
by a fashion scout as he loitered outside Times
Square Virgin Megastore and has spent the past
four years on an unlikely trajectory as male
model. Growing fed up with flouncing up and
down catwalks in 2012, he started Drowners
with guitarist Jack Ridley, bassist Erik Snyder
and drummer David Rubin. "“I went home to my
parents’ house in Wales for two months to renew
my visa,” Hitt explained recently. “That’s when I
wrote a bunch of songs. My favorite band ever are
The Smiths and the main thing I wanted to do was
Johnny Marr–esque guitar lines and post-punk
drums.”
