The name sounds like something your cat might
type walking across your keyboard. Actually, this
is the stage name of breathy UK vocalist Tahlia
Barnett, a Cotswolds native of Spanish and Jamaican
extraction. As you're probably wondering, 'Twigs'
refers to the way her bones would 'pop' as a child
while FKA stands for “formerly known as". Having
moved to London aged 17 to break into music, she
started as a backing dancer with Jessie J (squint and
you'll see her in the 2010 'Do It Like A Dude' promo).
All the while she was fine-tuning her sound, a
spacey R&B somewhere between Alicia Keyes and
Massive Attack. Signed to Young Turks, home to
The xx, SBTRKT, John Talabot and others, she has
achieved steady progress, with her single 'Water Me'
clocking up 100,000 YouTube hits. Explaining her
influences, she's sought to connect her futuristic
sound to the past. "Everybody else in school was
listening to Take That," she said. "And I was listening
to Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald."
