Along with industrial decline and ground-breaking
techno, Detroit has long been synonymous with
idiosyncratic hip hop. To the ranks of Eminem,
Angel Haze and, er, Kid Rock, we can now
welcome Lizzo. A veteran of R&B groups Cornrow
Clique and I N I T I A L S, Lizzo's confrontational
flow has seen her tagged as the new Missy Elliot.
In truth her influences are far more eclectic.
Relocated to Minneapolis, she's part of a circle
of leftfield musicians that includes producer
Aaron Mader (better known by his Beak moniker)
and über-scenester Ryan Olson, the creative
force behind Gayngs and Polica. Thus, alongside
her impressive rhyming, she has a taste for offkilter
arrangements, testament to her audible
willingness to push her chosen genre in an entirely
different direction.
