A chart star by dint of duetting with Rihanna
on her 2012 hit 'Stay' (which he also wrote), can
Ekko parlay fame-by-association into a proper
career? Born John Stephen Sudduth, the Louisiana
producer has been around a while: his debut
EP came out in 2009, and he's also written for
Christina Aguilera. Surprisingly, when Rihanna
approached him with a view to recording 'Stay'
he hesitated: the tune was very personal and
he wasn't sure if he wanted to just give it away.
"I struggled so much with that song. It came
from a really vulnerable place for me and I don't
like writing that kind of stuff. So when I heard
Rihanna wanted to record it, it was difficult
for me, but I realised it was such a magnificent
opportunity. It was a huge affirmation for me.
It was an opportunity to marry what I do with
arguably the most visible platform on the planet.
That was so cool to me, because that was the last
song you'd expect."
