When Myles Manley upped sticks and left Sligo for
The Big Smoke, he came not to fritter about the
outskirts of pop, but to get right inside and fiddle
around with the genre. Convention and Myles
Manley don’t have much in common, but this is
no common-or-garden artist. Having travelled to
London and New York, writing songs all the while,
he returned to Dublin to record. He plays with
backing band The Little People, concocting tunes
of peculiarity, striking intelligence and no little
immediacy. His bunged-up, nasal mumble of a
voice is hard to ignore, as are song titles like ‘I Fuck
Your Wife’. Three EPs arrived over the last year or
so, spanning folk, rock and electronica, before the
12 most memorable were gathered up as Greatest
Hits 2012-2013
(another winning title) as a “sham
release for newcomers.” Arresting songwriting, big
imagination and promising execution. Our own M
and M is on to something.
