The main voice emanating from the Grand Pocket
Orchestra, Paddy Hanna opens his 2014 account
with a release under his own name. The debut
solo album from the Popical Island musician is set
to be a sumptuous affair, featuring No Monster
Club’s Bobby Aherne on bass and Enda Canavan behind the skins. Full of warmth and light, his new
material to date has been all about brow-soothing.
If Hanna appeared at the end of your bed one
night and started singing lullabies to you it would
be bizarre, sure, but you wouldn’t tell him to put a
sock in it and get the hell out. The cheery, insistent
‘Join The Army’ and ode to the late, great, obese
soul legend ‘Barry White’ both glide along with
little fuss or effort on first listen. Then an hour
later you realise they’ve taken root in your brain.
Deceptively gentle, extremely clever pop.
