If a new Irish national anthem was composed
in the morning, it would most likely be an
electro-pop number. The very simply named ‘R’
(a Googler’s dream, naturally) add a little Gallic
charm to their sound. The Irish/French duo are
comprised of brothers Pierre and Marc O’Reilly.
The former is a film composer, the latter previously
made his mark in the folk-blues genre. Together,
they are signed to Salt And Shake Records, with
their debut release on the label making waves
on both sides of the Irish Sea. Steve Lamacq
championed it as a “terrifically charming piece of
music”, with Martyn Ware (Heaven 17, The Human
League) saying that it restored his “faith in the
future of songwriting.” So on the evidence of the
hypnotic, hushed ‘Change’, playlisted across BBC
Radio and on Today FM and 2fm at home, R are on
the verge of something big. Now, to sidestep that
‘difficult second song syndrome’. No pressure.
