Somewhere up there, sitting on some Big Star, Alex
Chilton is looking down and smiling. Stealing the
name of his supreme slices of power-pop, Dublin’s
September Girls are a quintet in thrall to heavenly
melodies and honeyed harmonies. They also like
noise. Caoimhe, Jessie, Lauren, Paula and Sarah
formed in a garage (by the sound of things) in
September (of course) 2011 and have been dishing
out hazy, reverb-drenched numbers ever since.
Another new Irish band that could be supplanted
to the California sunshine with not a hint of jet
lag, there’s some darkness and depth to keep you
coming back for more. The Bangles, of course, once
covered ‘September Girls’ and if you took those ‘80s
chart-toppers, let the feedback reign and injected it
all with a dose of dolour, you wouldn’t be a million
miles from this lot. It’s the Ramones/Mary Chain
thing updated. Our very own Vivian Girls.
