Is it cheating to include an act who first started
promoting themselves on MySpace? Well, pretty
quickly Speed Of Snakes slithered offline and only
recently resurfaced to give things a proper go, so
we’re saying no. A collaboration between BATS’
Rupert Morris and The Vinny Club’s Vin McCreith
(also of Adebisi Shank – boy do those boys like a
good side project), true to their name, Speed Of
Snakes are a pacey, discombobulating proposition.
Taking late ‘80s rave as a starting point and ‘80s
synths as their vehicles of choice, they're turning
the 8-bit sound from a mild, cultish diversion on to
pop’s main road. Oh, and they’ve a decent, totally
believable backstory that begins: “88 trillion years
ago, the great snake Metatraxium created the Universe,
the Earth and all the life upon it. Each species birthed
from a succession of fantastic and horrifying eggs...”
