Not a group, but a movement. It’s high time we had
a hip hop collective of note on these shores, and
The Animators will do very nicely indeed. Bringing
together MCs, producers and vocalists, they recall
Jurassic 5 and the Wu-Tang Clan, as well as the
more innocent days of rap. A high-minded bunch,
misogyny, thug-headed boasting and gang culture
are not for them. Instead, Mathman, Mango, Ricki
Rawness, Russell Flow, Smokie J and Classquatch
are pushing things forward with a positive
approach. Which means nothing if you don't have
the tunes to back it up. Luckily, they have plenty of
bangers in (should that be up?) their arsenal. The
misty-eyed Classquatch production ‘Those Were
The Days’ employs the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
to arresting effect and is their first big statement.
Keep your ears peeled for more, these guys have
intent. And it’s all good.
