Soundtrack to Seduction

Colm O'Regan

When it comes to setting the mood, getting your choice of music right is crucial. We asked some of our favourite Irish musicians to pick out the songs to soundtrack your love life, from tender moments to steamy romps. If music be the food of love, play on...

When it comes to the bedroom, Drake is a constant presence in my life. I love his music. Kendrick Lamar too. Give me plenty of hip-hop. That's usually a solid choice.

One song that will always stand out to me is The Postal Service’s ‘Such Great Heights’. I wooed my girlfriend of five years with that song. I made her a playlist, and that was one of the first tracks on it. Yes, it’s a romantic song anyway, but it’s because of that situation that it resonates so much for me.

For a sexy song, you’ve got to get some things right. The tempo is important, because you want that slow jam beat; sultry and seductive vocals; and innuendo. I personally think it’s far more sexy when it's not actually said exactly what’s going on, but gives you the vibe that things are going to get steamy when you get home.

‘That’s The Way Love Goes’, by Janet Jackson, is one of the sexiest songs ever. She says things like “I’m going to take you there”; it’s not spelling it out, but you just know. It’s a very seductive track.

"On my bedroom playlist, I’d also have Drake’s ‘Hold On, We’re Coming Home’, and ’Down On Me’ by Jeremiah. D’Angelo’s ‘How Does It Feel’ is incredibly sexy. A lot of R&B is great!

"An amazing album is Only By The Night by Kings Of Leon. It starts with ‘Closer’, and the whole album is great.

Recently, while I was in the middle of — well, y’know — ‘Hello’ by Adele came on the stereo. We both looked at each other and burst out laughing. There’s no coming back from that: no way you’re having sex to an Adele tune! So boys, get your ‘Sex Music’ playlist ready on Spotify — and do it well, because it’s an easy way to judge a guy’s taste!

They say communication is tone and gesture, and for me a guy like Chet Baker has that romantic tone. I love Al Green's ‘How Can You Mend A Broken Heart' and Roberta Flack’s version of ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’: it’s not just the lyrics of those songs, but the tone as well.

For me, love is laughter, and a relationship with laughter is one that will last. My wife and I, our song is 1000 Clowns’ ‘Not The Greatest Rapper’.

I’m always interested in the imperfections of a relationship, and Lou Reed’s ‘Perfect Day’ captures that amazingly. David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ has that too, with a couple battling against all odds.

As for sex, Barry White can make anything sexy — but I’m not sure that 'sexy' and 'romantic' are the same thing.

Niamh Farrell

I’m a sucker for a good love song. A guy standing outside my bedroom with a ghetto blaster playing my favourite song would be fine by me! When I was a teenager, I loved making mixtapes – and getting them – complete with handwritten letters and the whole lot. I still have some of those tapes that I got over the years, and they still mean a lot.

For me, ‘Simple Song’ by The Shins would be up there. James Mercer writes beautiful songs about his wife, and there’s some incredible lyrics in that song. ‘I Will Follow You Into The Dark’ by Death Cab For Cutie is the same. I’m always drawn in by lyrics, and the sentiment of that song, about a journey through a lifetime, breaks my heart. I love it!

As far as sexy music goes, when things hot up, I like songs that are intimate. I’d far rather something personal and romantic than bump’n’grind stuff! All of Jeff Buckley’s Grace, for instance, is wonderful. ‘Lover You Should Have Come Over’ is such a sexy song. And I love ‘Karen’ by The National. It's pretty full on, but incredibly sexy!
